a lil' shameless self-promotion

Hip Hop's Holy Trinity by Lynne d Johnson

This piece examines the success of 50 Cent within the context of his relationship to Dr. Dre and Eminem. Perhaps, 50's meteoric rise to stardom would not have been as influential had he not been strategically placed within this triad. This relationship is a classic text book case for urban music marketing, similar to how Ashanti was positioned as a hook singer on some serious tracks and then was set forth as the heir apparent of the Murder Inc. family.

Excellent as always, Lynne. I was especially intrigued by the Trinity analogy. When you sit and think about it, it's amazing how many artists have been touched by Dre at some point and how far his extended family tree goes. I submit to you, that I believe that the D.O.C. (from my home state of Texas), had he not gotten into that ill fated car accident that damaged his larynx, would have been Dr. Dre's first REAL musical protege to truly BLOW UP. His album was nearly magnificient, with Dre's beats and DOC's flow. I still think 50 Cent is benefiting from the luxury of superstar affiliation, and great timing. Eminem raps circles around him on 'Patiently Waiting'...50 sounds like he needs tutoring..LMAO!!

Star child, yes probably..The Holy Ghost..I doubt it..

I need more than one album to anoint Mr. Two Quarters...

Great article!

lynne, you've definitely delivered a unique perspective to the dre/em/50 alliance.

i admit that even this far along into the game, i have yet to take 50 seriously. i haven't even listened to his cd. which after reading this article is something i actually want to do.

right now i am not totally convinced with 50. maybe it's because i don't completely relate to him. i mean most of his content is so far from any reality i can dream of. does one have to be able to relate in order to acknowlege one's talent?

Off Subject:
When will people wake up and realize that Ashanti is not deserving of all the accolades she is receiving? Personally I'm tired of the lack of talent she possesses in addition to the "ah baby, oh baby" lyrics she always manages to have a in plethora. This fails to mention the lack of dance training she exhibits. No, I'm not playa hating, I'm just tired of "stars" that don't shine without a spotlight, blinding the masses with articificial brightness when they are so undeserving of it due to a lack of nature's rewards.

Preach on, Lynnne. Solid analysis. Dre is well... something else. He has that Quincy Jones thing happenin' alright. I feel ya on Ashanti, Bink. Ah baby, oh baby... Baby please STOP!

Gimme a break. From A) Lynne for comparing Shady, etc to the Holy Trinity when in fact is more like a circus or more exactly the WWE. Dre is Mcmahon. Eminem is Stone Cold. and 50 is the Rock.
B) Em - for putting "killas" in his lyrics. Next time he pulls out tell him to load first.
