The Addictive Nature of The Wire

the_wire.jpg

Jason Toney is a serious fan of HBO's The Wire. It's most likely his fault that I've become addicted. My association with Jason's fandom goes back even farther than these weekly write ups he wrote about the series, like this one on The Wire: Glitches in the System (404). He's actually been writing about the series since it started as far as I can remember -- here and there, off and on.

For a while, I didn't know where to fit The Wire in. Or, I should say, if it made sense to me. But suddenly, it took on a life of its own in my mindspace, and has become a pleasant addiction extending beyond my very own control.

For instance, last night, as soon as it turned midnight, I checked HBO on Demand to make sure next week's episode was up and ready for viewing. It was. So I sat and watched -- intently. You see HBO on Demand makes episodes of The Wire and Def Comedy Jam available for subscribers, beginning on Mondays. That is it makes next week's episode available. The episode that most people won't see until the following Sunday that is.

So just as most people are watching this week's episode on Sunday, I'm already watching next week's episode. This puts me 6 days ahead of the average viewer. But I don't discuss my addiction with anyone. This is something I do alone, in private. I told you. I'm very addicted. Honestly, I believe a lot of people are.

And no, I won't tell you what's happening on next Sunday's episode. If you don't have HBO On Demand, you'll just have to wait.

I completely understand your addiction. I got addicted mid-season once a friend told me about how great the show is and how much I needed to watch it. I watched the beginning of the season On Demand and now I'm hooked. Last night I randomly woke up at 3 am to watch the newest episode On Demand. I think I almost cried three times during the episode, but I'm a sap like that. I'm sad that next week will be the finale, as I'll miss all the characters. It feels like my friends are going home and can't come out and play anymore. I'm pretty attached to everyone, even the folks I can't stand. Well, okay, maybe not Namond's mama. She can go kick rocks.

Excuse me for my language and lack of critical analysis, but HBO's The Wire is the shiznit! The best damn drama on cable television.

I don't know if this makes me an addict or insane, but I have Seasons 1 through 3 on DVD. (I don't have a DVD-R machine or Tivo.)

If you want another TV addiction, tune in next year (probably in January) for FX's The Shield. The best damn cop show since NYPD Blue. Nah, scratch that, it's the best damn cop show in the history of all cop shows on television.

That's all I watch -- The Wire and The Shield.

And Chappelle's Show on DVDs.

You think you're bad... at the beginning of the season, someone put the whole season on the internets... I downloaded every episode and watched the entire season in a week...

Now BET will be airing the show in January? Can't wait...

Lester I'd love to hear about it. I've been at the same parties as Andre, and even ran into he and Mums (Poet from OZ) in harlem one day while I was having brunch with Donald. Though I've seen Bubbles in BK many times, that day in Harlem was the first time we were formally introduced (thanks Mums). He's probably forgotten of course.

I came in late to the game and only got addicted by accident; I bought Season 1 for EJ and ended up watching it myself.

There's something so real and human about the writing that I can't help but hang on every scene.

And Omar has to be the most interesting character on television.

I'm all caught up now and waiting for the next season.
