summertime catcalling

now that the sun's out again in new york city, the ladies are exposing some skin. it's cool and it's sexy. and i totally get how men react to the shedding of coats and of sweaters. but when i hear a man loudly discussing the bodyparts of a minor or approaching a woman whom he has to know is a minor, it really upsets me. in fact, i've even said a word or two to such a dog.

do you sit idly by when you witness such an affair?

I feel you Lynne.
I understand where you are coming from . . .

But damn Lynne, some of these ladies in NYC are showing a lot of flesh! Personally, I think it's too much flesh.

I was eating outside at a Thai restuarant in NYC and this fine-ass woman walked by in white linen capri pants, a white halter top and white sneakers.

Not only was I able to see the girl's nipples but her areoles as well. I also saw camel toe, yellow panties and everything else through the capri pants. She had a gorgeous fat butt. Man, it was incredible. Anyway . . .

When she walked by I literally said "Gawd Damn!" but nothing more.

Unfortunately, the guy across the way heard me and then replied loudly, "Damn right, she got a nice ass."

The lady kept walking but I wanted to tell dude to be discreet with his comments.

Look, Lynne. I feel ya. But some of the ladies out here are off the freakin' chain.
I gotta say somethin'.

And nowadays you can't tell the difference between a 12-year-old girl and a 20-year-old woman sometimes. These 9-year-old girls are more developed than the 21-year-old women. And some of them are flirtateous as well.

Trust me, there have been times when I wanted to holla at a buxom and bootylicious 16-year-old vixen. But I got self control, I know better. But there are a lot of brothers out here who simply just don't care. If they can get it -- they will hit it! Age doesn't matter.

But I feel ya, Lynne. But sometimes these young girls are hollering back and all the sudden R. Kelly comes to mind. I'm not blaming the girls and what they wear.

All I'm sayin' is that some of the 13, 14, 15, 16-year-old girls are sexually active and it's not with men their own age. Let me tell ya!

You can get mad, but a lot of shit is goin' down like Yung Joc. Shits crazy in the streets.

I thought you were starting to bust out some lyrics for a new version of Latifah's "U.N.I.T.Y." or something! Seriously, it goes both ways. Some men are really disrespectful but at the same speed some women are really putting it out there (including the minors!) and not expecting anything negative. It ain't gonna happen.

It sounds selfish but I'm worrying about my own. I'm trying to bring up some self-respecting young ladies that judge their own appearance without discovering it in a video or magazine. More importantly I'm to make sure they don't base their morale on it. In the meanwhile I'll just shake my head in defiance of my weak and narrow-minded brothas.

I just get annoyed that they're not whistling or catcalling at me... I mean, what gives? Am I losing my sex appeal?

This is a multilayered issue. Certainly, it's crass for men to make leering remarks at women (of any age). But you have to remember that men are socially accepted as dogs. And many women take the attention as an affirmation of their femininity.

I believe everyone should be able to dress they way they want. But when choosing to dress provocatively, you have to know you will get comments. It goes with the territory.

As for the underage females, Trent has a point. Girls dress way too old these days. Hip Hop certainly haven't helped the youth with its proliferation of scantily clad "video hoes". Teenagers take these images seriously and dress in the same manner whether they are going to a party, school, or the corner store for a loaf of bread, a container of milk and a stick of butter.

As a kid, I occasionally saw "old heads" (men in their 20s) trying a "hey, miss" on some sashaying, ripe-to-bursting minor from around the way. AFAIK, it's been in fun, and there's a chorus of chuckles over (I assume) the ridiculousness of the intent. That said, I have wondered what would've happened if imagined proto-nymph turned the tables and called the bluff.

But I knew them dudes and I was fairly confident (if naievely so) nothing was really behind it other than some idle humour.

Admonishing some strange dude tryin a pass? Hmm. Well, let's say some situations are better for a woman to investigate thoroughly than a dude. It's unlikely a woman will get a gang beatdown for a public and confrontational cockblock (assuming it was a real "thrust"). Might be better, all things considered, to just
encourage lil miss applebaum to keep it movin.

Myself, I've been in a few nervous please-don't-stand-so-close-to-me situations, but it hasn't been difficult keeping the gun holstered, nahmeen. I can only imagine it's some crazy low self-esteem issues for a grown-ass man to make a genuine, intentful pass at a minor. Tsk, tsk.
