i don't even wear tubesocks anymore

i don't think i've used the word tubesock since the pair i owned that featured j.j. evans in his signature hat, clapping his hands, with the word "Dyn-O-Mite!" emblazoned over his head. but it looks like i've got a reason to start thinking about tubesocks again, but fortunately i won't have to wear them.

i just read about this nifty little utility over at The Gonzales Spot. TubeSock is a shareware app that enables you to grab YouTube videos from the web and copy them to your video iPod, Mac, or PlayStation Portable. It can also simply grab the audio portion or the video and add it for you.

It's been downloaded 1,095 times over at VersionTracker already and has a 4-star rating.

classic playlist

god_only_knows.jpgsince latley i tend to be more of a singles type of chick than a full album gal, this is one of my favorite playlists i've put together and can often be found bobbling my head to it. i suppose i should be really web 2.0 about this and create an imix or webjay playlist so i can share it with folks. (nah, who has time for that)

On Being The News

The date was August 15, 2006. I was confirmed to be recorded live for a segment of ABC's World News This Morning. I figured I could handle it. I'd been on on Public Access TV, been reocrded for Webcasts, screen tests, and other TV news programs, spoken on panels, and have taught large classrooms. This was going to be a piece of cake. Or was it?

I thought so...and so I looked over the story I'd be referring to a bit the night before, got myself about 4 or 5 hours of sleep, and arose around 2:30 AM ready to knock it out the box.

The gear and hair were all in place by the time the private car arrived at my building to take me to the studio. A PA came down to take me to the studio floor. I was dashed into hair and makeup and then got mic'ed up, then was walked over to the newsroom desk besides the newscaster. No problem. I smiled at her as she went through her papers making notes. We sat there in the silence, she looking at her papers, and me looking at the cameras and teleprompters all around me. And looking, and waiting...and waiting...and...

10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1...and live. Oh shit. What was it I was talking about again? Oh yeah, new forms of advertising. It's 4:40 am, and I'm sitting here ready to answer questions from this newscaster who I haven't even shaken hands with. OK...breathe. You know this kid. You know this advertising stuff, Besides, this is one-on-one, you've spoken in front of large groups—so this should be nothing. Where are your eyes going? Why are they roaming and not focused on the news chick? This is live. Get your A game back.

Oh there it is. Whew, last question. Slam dunk. Smile. Engage. On point. This is easy. No, it's not. It's live not recorded. No rehearsals. No mistakes. But you definitely almost totally lost it. Almost couldn't reel it back in. Better get more than just your look ready next time. This shit ain't as easy as it looks.

all this aside...i won't be YouTubing, blipping or PhotoBucketing the video - even if my continued existence depended upon it. as the kids say, it wouldn't be a good look.

where's the time?

between social networking on linkedin, last.fm, ryze, goingon, and vox, and (unfortunately) MySpace, while using tools such as technorati, YouTube, flickr, skype, del.icio.us, and digg, it's a wonder i have time for anything else.

not that i'm using any of these services to its fullest capacity, though i find del.icio.us especially useful in my profession. sometimes, i can bookmark a string of items on the web to pass on to a reporter, or to myself, to spark an article idea.

but again, sometimes the abundance of all these services—considering there are far more than i've named here—makes me wonder whether there are far too many things to do on the web nowadays and if we'll soon be approaching a bubble.

How you doing?

I know I've been MIA for a minute, but I've got lots of news to share.

While away—I've been on the news, had a birthday, got whisked away to Niagra Falls as a surprise for my birthday, got a new iPod, and have been writing, reading, and thinking—and of course listening to music.

There's also a mystery Amazon gift waiting for me at the post office. I wonder which one of my blog fam sent it. Guess I'll find out when I pick it up, that's hoping it's still there.

Anyway...give me a minute and I'll start narrating some of these experiences to you. Might also include some links to flickr images. That's right, I finally broke down and signed up.

hot off the web 08.03.06

Since posting in more than one media outlet can be utter madness...

  • The Fall of the AOL Wall - Finally AOL has realized that it's 2006 and nobody pays for email service (and some not even for Internet connections).

  • MTV + AOL + CNN = YouTube - A little bit of YouTube goes a long way.

  • The New Media Elite - The Wall Street Journal's take on the who's who on the Web. Not a lot of diversity there either.

  • Thoughts on Women and Collaboration - My wrap up of BlogHer (though I forgot to mention the ethnic diversity issue: how to get more POCs out to the event might just be a task for me. but i was also remiss on the focus on the mommybloggers but my buddy over at sour duck handled that one already.

And on to other happenings...


  • GreenCine Daily on V - the Wachoswki Brothers Production makes its DVD debut this week

  • Outkast - Idlewild Blues (video) - unlike that Morris Brown jawn that has no Andre 3000 this one has all Andre 3000 on some Jimi Hendrix ish.

  • meebome enables you to log into all your IMs from one widget - based on meebo. Now this wasn't a big thrill to myself, someone who uses both Adium and Fire, but it's actually better becuase it's web-based and employs Ajax so it acts like a desktop publication. And for those of you wroking in firewalled to the brim offices, here's a way to get your IM out.

  • The 2006 Black Weblog Awards is on and popping. Go nominate someone or support with a donation for the winners.

  • In honor of the release of that Xtina Aguilery joint, go cop that "Ain't No Other Man" Curtis Mayfield "Puserhman" mashup by artyfufkin.

  • And finally...I've been doing this dance for a month or so and watching the Harlem kids wreck shop over at YouTube...that's right NYC will now officially stop snaping their fingers and handbrake dancing (all copped from the ATL)...we getting fresh off that chicken noodle soup.

Call for Papers: Wellesley, Women, Hip-Hop

Female hip-hop enthusiasts rejoice. This fall, Wellesley College presents its first ever one day symposium on women in hip-hop. This event will celebrate the successes and contributions of women in hip-hop through keynote speeches, art exhibitions, film screenings, and special performances.

This conference will move the dialogue about women in hip-hop forward, past the conversations about video girls and Eminem lyrics that have been taking place for years. This conference will give voice to new topics and new directions in hip-hop, and examine the way we think about hip-hop and its intersection with gender and sexuality.

If you are interested in presenting research, a paper topic, facilitating a workshop, moderating a panel, or otherwise contributing to this conference, please submit an abstract to WellesleyHipHop@gmail.com by September 22, 2006. Some travel accommodations for presenters can be met.

The conference will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2006 on the campus of Wellesley College.
