a kanye west question
Is Kanye West the hardest working man in urban music right now (a la James Brown), or are we experiencing over saturation? Is all that he's doing going to make us love him and want to hear him more, or will it make us tired of him and want to hear him less? There's a host of songs currently in airplay and video rotation that he's currently featured on, and to be quite honest I'm beginning to feel like it's just a little bit too much. Here's a rundown of some of the latest songs he's featured on, and that's not even mentioning the Twista songs:
Janet Jackson, "My Baby" (featuring Kanye West) listen
White Boy, "U Know" (featuring Kanye West) listen
Slum Village, "Selfish" (featuring Kanye West) listen
Dilated Peoples, "This Way" (featuring Kanye West) listen
Brandy, "Talk About Our Love" (featuring Kanye West) listen
Jin, "I Gotta Love," (featuring Kanye West) listen
Talib Kweli, "Wack Niggas" (featuring Common, Kanye West, and Consequence)

hmmm. i never jumped on the kanye bandwagon from the jump, so it's not really on point to say, "i'm over him", the truth is, although i think he's straight, i was never really feeling him like everybody else seems to be. *shrugs*.

I think Kanye is a talented producer. I'm not too keen on rapping skills though. I purchased his album & I can count on one hand the amount of times I've actually listened to it. I'm tired of seeing him now. I think other folks will tire of him quickly as well. Is it just me or does it seem like he recycles his rhymes in every song?

last year the same thing happened to Just Blaze. We love producers so much that they get overplayed and we get tired of them. Same ol' cycle in music.

Damn. I was thinking the same thing.
Obviously, Kanye is talented. But I'm always critical of heavy-handed producers - who are essentially artists - dominating the airwaves. It's a crutch "urban" music relies on a bit too often.
On the otherhand, the new Brandy joint is the butters!

Y'all are gonna hate me for this:
But I love Kanye West!
More Kanye West
He is the best
He is so fresh!
And yes, he is a Hip-Hop Savior!
What did Kanye save hip-hop from?
From the doldrums, baby!
But don't sleep on Ghostface!
The Pretty Toney Album is the shiznit! Pure butters, baby!
2004's Three Kings:
Kanye, Twista and Ghostface.
Hip-hop is not dead, it's Kanye!
Oh, y'all sleeping on a brotha!
And let me throw these four words at cha: Jean Grae in Sept.
Oh, y'all not hearing me, I'm outta here!
Holla back!

hmmm...
mr. kanye seems to have radio on lock.
i'm not sure if it's a good thing or bad. radio is heavily saturated with the same watered down bullshit anyways....so i'm thinking kanye fits in. yes, they've worn him out!!
i liked kanye initially, but i'm tired of hearing the same producers over and over.
timbaland to the neptunes to kanye...it's all the same to me.
i don't know, i'm getting tired just thinking about it. lol

Kanye's emergence has created a buzz as he seems to be the new kid on the production block. Everyone seems to want a piece of him which is good business for him as well as his pockets and to be totally honest that’s what this whole thing is about as it’s seldom about the music. If we’re talking about talent here, he’s got skills on the production front however, there are a host of other talented producers out there who can stand to have their works credited as such, but that’s the way of the “industry” as we await the next “best thing that’s happened to hip-hop”.

I know you are asking a Kanye West question, but what about Lil Jon?
He's everywhere too. And let's keep it real, his music is getting stretch waaaaaay too thin. That crunk shit has got to stop.
According to my radio playlist charts, the Lil Jon-blessed bangers "Yeah" and "Freek-A-Leek" -- both clearly cut from the same production cloth -- are neck and neck in major radio spins.
The Elephant man joint, Ying-Yang Twins joint, Triville and Lil Scrappy crunk joints are all in the lower top 20 on playlist charts nationwide.
So what I'm trying to say?
I'm saying, "Leave Kanye West alone."
Nah, I'm only joking.
I just think Kanye and Lil Jon are the goto producers right now, just like the Neptunes and Timbaland were a few years back.
It can be troublsome when producers-turned artists are dominating the airwaves. Their music gets played out and after while there whole sound is lame and redundant. I'll tell you this : Record labels jumping on the hottest thing and running with it is a MAJOR crutch "urban" music relies on a waaaay too often.
Which may explain why today's rap music sound so monotone. It's all one sound and corny lyrics on top.
Record labels are scuuured to shake things up and bring something new to game. There's too much mediocre stuff out there.
But for right now, on my iTunes jukebox -- Ghostface, Kanye, Murs, Donny Hathaway (live CD), Okayplayer Comp and unreleased tracks by Jean Grae are straight banging the shit outta my ibook!
More Kanye, dammit!!
Hip-hop is not dead, it's just in another spirit.

Been a while since I been through here. Thank ej for reminding me you're still alive you busy thing you. Anyway, to your question...
I tend to view music that is consumed by radio and tv as commercial music and tend not to listen to it in general. Even if that means I sleep on some good stuff. To that end, I've been saved from Kanye oversaturation. What I have heard was aight. It was danceable, not "I wanna be a rap producer/artist" inpsiring. And that's what I'm looking for. Bottom line, none of the stuff we jump on commercially is about expressing anything of substance. It's about fitting a mold. Those that are even aware of the possibility of jumping out of that mold are scared spitless to do it. The rest...don't have a clue. The ones that do actually do it (i.e. The Roots and their latest) get ridiculed for it. So what can we really expect? We need to take it back to the days when folks actually had to LISTEN to music. I think music videos killed hip hop. I know it did for me. Everybody is rapping about stuff they can make a phat video for instead of stuff they actually care about. Change the motive, change the music, change the response. Aight... I'm done... peace...

Is it just me or are Kanye's beats overated!? I don't think he's that talented as a producer. He can't make a beat without sampling! Industry Exclusive: Kanye sent Timbaland 30 tracks to preview and Tim only liked 3! Can you believe that? And this is the man who is at the top right now? Come on now, we gotta blame Jay-Z and Rocafella for part of this. Did you think Jay was jokin when he said he can get you in the spot light. Had you ever seen 9th Wonder in a mag or even heard his name before he produced "Threats?" And Kanye's mom needs to play the background and stay away from the press. I admit, I thought he was good until he started sayin it. I think that every producer should have a slightly hidden cockyness and an exposed humbleness. I hate the Neptunes musically, but they are some of the most humble dudes and I respect that to the fullest. But if I heard one more sampled Kanye beat that people think is dope that really isn't, IMA GO HAYWIRE!!!

Kanye's beats are tight. Using Kanye's beat is a good career move for any MC. TV has tendencies to overrate people and underrate people. People that wouldn't stand out too much in real life, sometimes stands out greatly on TV. Therefore, Kanye West could be overrated, but I personally think he is an excellent Producer and a good MC. If he is overrated, then I don't think he is that much overrated. Some say he sucks as an MC but I disagree since his "wordplay" is pretty good. These examples should be sufficient: 1)Killing ya nig*** on that lyrical shit mayonase color benz I push miracle
whip. 2)for that benz I get CL love... So I switch my girls around like 3LW.
THAT IS IF HE WRITES HIS OWN LYRICS.

I think mad ppl hatin on Kanye. He really is one of the most talented. A lot of ppl even saying that 'The College Dropout' is better than Jay Z's 'The Black Album'. The contagious thing about Kanye that everybody must admit is that he's different as far as rap goes and arent we tired of Chingy, Nelly and J Kwon? They may be cute but its that same ol same ol money, girls, clubs and cars and Kanye raps about relative issues that we all encounter. The College Dropout is THE best, Kanye is a musical genius (f**k the haters) and to be honest, the CD is worth buying and if it wasn't I would've downloaded it. Go get it and listen to it carefully. I see why so many ppl want to collaborate with him.

KANYE WEST IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. HIP HOP IS SATURATED WITH REDUNDANT LYRICS ABOUT NOTHING. IF THERE WERE A LAW THAT BANNED RAPPING ABOUT MONEY, HOES, CLOTHES AND RIMS 75% OF HIP HOP WOULD FALL INTO THE ABYSS.(NI**S CAN'T MAKE IT TO BALLOTS TO CHOOSE LEADERSHIP, BUT THEY CAN MAKE IT TO JACOBS AND TO THE DEALERSHIP) HE SPEAKS ON TOPICS THAT A CAT CAN RELATE TO. (IF MY MANAGER INSULTS ME AGAIN, I WILL BE ASSAULTING HIM) GROWN MAN STUFF. HE EXPOSES HIS SOUL WHERE MOST DUDES IS TRYING TO PROVE HOW HARD THEY ARE AND THIS IS THE TRUE SIGN OF KEEPING IT REAL. SO HATERS HATE ALL YOU WANT BUT OVER 2MILLION PEOPLE OF ALL AGES RACES AND BACKGROUNDS ARE FEELING KANYE. HE HAS MADE ME LOVE HIP HOP AGAIN AND WITH (TALIB, COMMON, MOS AND OTHERS WE ARE ABOUT TO SEE A REBIRTH OF CATS HAVING FUN BUT TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING. IT LOOKS LIKE HIS DREAM HAS COME TRUE CUZ LAST WEEK IN THE ATL 35,000 PEOPLE AT SHOW WAS SCREAMING OUT "JESUS WALKS!!!

I love Kanye West especially as a producer but I think he should stick to producing and not rap{ no offense to all his fans}. Kanye has completely changed the hip hop game and I respect him for that. Kanye is soo talented and artistic with his tracks and he most definitely is here to stay. So BIG UPS 2 KANYE AND CHI-TOWN!!!!!

Kanye West is amazing. People say he can't make a beat without sampling, well that's just his style. Hip-hop started from sampled beats, diggin in the crates. He's real and he's doing his thing. Leave the dude alone. Personally I think sampled beat just feel more soulful, more deep. I respect Kanye for bringen the sample back.
